What is TRS? Teachers' Retirement System

Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.

A defined benefit plan provides the employee with a specific benefit at retirement based on a formula. Benefits are paid monthly for the lifetime of the member, possibly continuing for the lifetime of his or her beneficiary. The Code of Alabama 1975, Section 16-25 contains the actual language of the plan.

Participation is mandatory for UAB employees only.

LLC employees are not eligible to participate in TRS.

You can learn more about TRS in the TRS Member Handbook.

Please contact the UAB Benefits Office for more information.
