What is Open Enrollment?

Open enrollment is a period of time that occurs once per year, when benefit-eligible employees make changes to their elected benefit options, such as medical, dental and vision.  During this time employees can also can re-enroll in Flexible Spending Accounts if they wish to participate in the next year.

UAB has an active open enrollment which takes place in the fall.  An active open enrollment requires that UAB benefit-eligible employees elect, adjust or decline benefit elections.

It is important to note that if you do not make benefit elections for a new plan year, your medical, dental, vision, health care spending account and/or the dependent care spending account will be declined for the new plan year.

All other benefits that were selected in the current plan year will roll forward.

Key things to remember about UAB’s active open enrollment:

  • In order to maintain your benefits, you must enroll annually.
  • If you do not participate in UAB’s open enrollment, medical, dental, vision, health care spending account and/or the dependent care spending account will be declined for the new plan year.
  • All benefit elections made during open enrollment are effective January 1 of the new plan year.

If you have any questions, please contact the Benefits Office or go to the UAB for Me Portal.
