What is a qualifying life event?

A qualifying life event allows you to make changes to your benefits outside of annual open enrollment.

Common Qualifying life events include but are not limited to:

  • Marriage
  • Birth
  • Adoption or placement for adoption
  • Divorce
  • Gained Other Coverage
  • Involuntary loss of other coverage

The effective date of the benefit change will be the date of the qualifying life event. If you fail to process the life event within 31 days, you must wait until Annual Open Enrollment to make any benefit changes.

Visit UAB for Me Portal to process a qualifying life event.

Note:  Qualifying life events are regulated and determined by the IRS.  For a complete list of qualifying life events, please refer to https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/qualifying-life-events.
